Rio Tinto DFDM

Rio Tinto — Driver Fatigue and Distraction Monitoring (DFDM)

Rio Tinto operates a three-tier DFDM specification across their Pilbara iron ore operations. The tier that applies to your fleet depends on how long your assets are on site and what rolethey play. Geobox devices are actively deployed by contractors operating at Rio Tinto sitesincluding Gudai-Darri, Tom Price, West Angelas, Paraburdoo, Nammuldi, and Brockman.

Tier overview:

Tier 1 — Full IVMS The most demanding specification. Required for contractors with assetson site for extended periods in operational roles. Requires live GPS tracking, driver fatigueand distraction monitoring with connected alerts, variable speed zone monitoring with real-time in-cab alerts, event video recording, and remote platform access.

Geobox solution: VT3600AI + C29N dedicated DSM camera + GPS tracker on Geobox Fleet Telematics withRT KML geofences loaded

Tier 2 — Full IVMS minus real-time speed alerts Same as Tier 1 but without the real-timein-cab speed alert requirement. Simpler installation, lower cost. Worth negotiating Tier 2status before committing to Tier 1 — it is applied inconsistently across sites.

Geobox solution: VT3600AI + C29N + GPS tracker

Tier 3 — Occasional visitor Eye-closure and distraction monitoring with local recordingonly. No remote platform access required. The lowest-cost option and the most commonlynegotiated tier for short-term site visitors

Geobox solution: DFM-HV Pro (standalone) orGB220/GB245 (connected, adds capability for future upgrade)

Note for contractors: Tier status is not always applied consistently across Rio Tinto sites. We recommend confirming your tier directly with your site contact before committing to hardware.

Also on Geotab? If your fleet already runs Geotab GO9 for GPS tracking and speedmonitoring, you can add compliant dashcam video through the Surecam SC245 —integrates natively with MyGeotab, no second platform required.

Fortescue (FMG) IVMS

Fortescue — IVMS Compliance

Fortescue operates a tiered IVMS specification across their Pilbara iron ore operations including Christmas Creek, Cloudbreak, Eliwana, Solomon Hub, and Iron Bridge. Geobox supplies IVMS solutions directly to Fortescue and to contractors working at Fortescue operations.

Gate access — offline DFM The minimum requirement for visiting vehicles and short-termsite access is a working driver fatigue monitor. No GPS tracking or platform connectionrequired at the gate. The DFM-60 at $299 satisfies this requirement — plug into USB, mounton dashboard, drive to the gate. The DFM-HV is the preferred option for heavy vehicles.

Extended onsite — connected video required Assets operating on Fortescue sites forextended periods must record video for incident investigation. A connected dashcam withevent recording capability is required.

Geobox solution: GB220 or GB245 portakit — pre-configured before dispatch, plug in and go. Short-term subscription options available.

Portakit option For contractors on short-term assignments or using hire vehicles — all Geobox IVMS solutions are available as portakits. No permanent installation required. Minimum 3-month rental available on connected dashcam portakits.

BHP IVMS

HP — IVMS Compliance

BHP operates an IVMS requirement across their WA iron ore and resources operations. TheBHP specification requires GPS-based speed monitoring — vehicles must have a connected GPS tracker that records and reports speed data.

The BOLT2 OBD plug-in GPS tracker satisfies BHP’s IVMS speed monitoring requirement atminimum cost and maximum simplicity. For contractors requiring BHP’s more advanced IVMS 2.0 standard — including driver fatigue monitoring, AI dashcam, and driver ID — the GB245 or VT3600AI provides a complete IVMS 2.0 compliant solution. Plugs directly intothe OBD-II port — no auto-electrician, no permanent wiring. Pre-activated on the GeoboxFleet Telematics platform before dispatch.

For contractors who also need driver fatigue monitoring alongside GPS — combine theBOLT2 OBD with a DFM-60 for a complete two-device, plug-in IVMS solution with no installation required.

Roy Hill IVMS

Roy Hill — IVMS Compliance

Roy Hill operates a single large integrated mine, rail, and port operation in the Pilbara. Geobox IVMS-compliant devices are used by contractors operating at Roy Hill.

Roy Hill’s IVMS requirements cover GPS tracking and driver fatigue monitoring. Geobox solutions meet Roy Hill’s IVMS specification — contact us to confirm which device and configuration applies to your specific contract and vehicle type.

Other Operators

Other Operators — IGO, MinRes, Newmont and More

Geobox devices meet the IVMS specifications of a broad range of WA mining operators beyond the majors. If your site operator isn’t listed above, contact us — in our experience, most mine site IVMS requirements are softer in practice than they appear on paper, and a solution that works at Rio Tinto Tier 1 will meet almost any other operator’s requirements.

“I have recently had 5 IVMS units installed by the team at Geobox on a range of vehiclesand trucks. I am very happy with the units and the performance of the new software theyrun. I did have some minor teething issues at the start but Mike and the team are ontofixing any issues or making adjustments at a moments notice. A company that servestheir clientele as well as Geobox are becoming harder and harder to find. I highlyrecommend working with Geobox for any IVMS compliance or equipment.” — Leighton Manning

Frequently Asked Questions — Mining IVMS Compliance

What IVMS do I need for a Rio Tinto site?

Rio Tinto operates a three-group DFDM (Driver Fatigue and Distraction Monitoring) specification — Group One, Group Two, and Group Three. The group that applies depends on your contract risk profile, assessed annually by Rio Tinto procurement. Under the updated v5.0 specification (February 2026), seat vibration is now mandatory for both Group One and Group Two contractors. Group One requires full IVMS plus DFDM including driver ID, seat vibration, yawning detection, IR illumination, GPS tracking, geofencing, and real-time platform notifications. Group Two requires full DFDM including seat vibration, yawning detection, and IR illumination, plus IVMS speed monitoring and seatbelt detection — but no driver ID required. Group Three contractors have low driving risk exposure and are only required to have documented processes to manage driver fatigue and a vehicle register — no device is technically mandated, though a driver fatigue monitor is strongly recommended and expected on most sites. Contact us to confirm which group applies to your contract before purchasing.

For FMG gate access, a working offline driver fatigue monitor is the minimum requirement. The DFM-60 ($299) plugs into the vehicle’s USB or cigarette socket and satisfies FMG’s gate access requirement — no GPS tracking, no platform, no data subscription required. For vehicles operating on Fortescue sites for extended periods, connected video recording is required — the GB220 or GB245 portakit covers this.

Yes — for most mine site access requirements, a plug-in portable IVMS (portakit) is fully compliant. Geobox portakits are pre-configured with your site’s compliance rules before dispatch and require no permanent installation. The DFM-60 plugs into USB for gate access. The GB220 and GB245 portakits plug into 12V power and appear on the Geobox Video Telematics platform immediately on power-up. Minimum 3-month rental available.

IVMS (In-Vehicle Monitoring System) covers GPS tracking, speed monitoring, and driver behaviour. IVFMS (In-Vehicle Fatigue Monitoring System) specifically refers to driver fatigue and distraction monitoring — eye closure detection, yawning, phone use, and distraction alerts. Most current mine site specifications require both — commonly referred to together as IVMS. Geobox solutions cover both requirements in a single device.

IVMS 2.0 is the industry term for the next generation of mine site IVMS compliance — combining GPS tracking with AI-powered driver fatigue and distraction monitoring, driver identification, and connected video in a single integrated system. BHP and other major operators increasingly reference IVMS 2.0 standards. Geobox’s GB245 and VT3600AI range meet IVMS 2.0 requirements.

Yes — under the updated Rio Tinto DFDM specification (RTIO-0952473 v5.0, February 2026), seat vibration is mandatory for both Group One and Group Two contractors. The seat vibration (haptic) alert must trigger for fatigue events including yawning detection. The Geobox VT3600AI Max has a native digital relay output for direct seat vibrator connection — the simplest compliant solution. Note: v5.0 is not yet uniformly enforced across all Rio Tinto sites — confirm current requirements with your site contact before mobilising.

Yes. Geobox IVMS devices meet BHP’s speed monitoring and IVMS compliance requirements. The BOLT2 OBD plug-in tracker satisfies BHP’s basic GPS speed monitoring requirement. For BHP sites requiring full IVMS 2.0 compliance including fatigue monitoring and connected video, the GB245 or VT3600AI with C29N dedicated DSM camera is the recommended solution.

Geobox holds stock of all portable IVMS variants in our Perth depot. For standalone DFM devices (gate access), same-day dispatch is available for orders placed before midday. For connected portakits (pre-configured with your site rules), allow 24-48 hours for configuration before dispatch. Our Perth team can confirm stock availability and dispatch timing by phone — call 1300 436 269.

The GB220 and GB245 are self-contained devices — GPS tracking, driver fatigue monitoring, ADAS, and connected dashcam in a single unit with a single subscription. No separate GPS tracker required. For standalone DFM devices (gate access only), GPS tracking is not included — add a BOLT2 OBD tracker if location visibility is also required.

Geobox IVMS solutions are actively deployed by contractors and operators at Rio Tinto operations (Gudai-Darri, Tom Price, West Angelas, Paraburdoo, Nammuldi, Brockman), Fortescue operations (Christmas Creek, Cloudbreak, Eliwana, Solomon Hub, Iron Bridge), and Roy Hill. Geobox also supplies IVMS devices that meet BHP, IGO, and MinRes specifications.
