What is Rio Tinto DFDM compliance?
Group One — Full IVMS + DFDM
Individual driver ID with vehicle immobilisation forunidentified drivers, geofencing, GPS speed monitoring with real-time alerts, harsh eventdetection, seatbelt monitoring, a rest-break alert after 2 hours 30 minutes of continuous driving, real-time fatigue and distraction alerts with seat vibration, detection that works through sunglasses, and real-time notifications to your team on every event. Mass transport vehicles are always Group One, regardless of your overall group rating.
Group Two — Full IVMS + DFDM
The same core detection technology as Group One —including real-time speed alerts, the 2 hour 30 minute rest-break alert, and through-sunglassesdetection — without the individual driver ID, immobilisation, geofencing, or real-time notification requirements.
Group Three — Low risk
A process-based minimum — documented fatigue management and a vehicle/driver register. No device is mandated at this level. Confirm your group with your Rio Tinto contact before selecting a solution — group assignments are reviewed annually. If you’re Group One or Two, your sub-contractors generally need to meet Group Two as a minimum, or Group One if they’re operating mass transport vehicles.

Simpler, more cost-effective, but not yet compliant on sunglasses detection
Covers the Group One/Two IVMS and general DFDM requirements, but GB245 alone doesn’t currently meet the through-sunglasses requirement — pending either the new USB Aux camera (expected December 2026). It also needs a seat vibration harness and Driver ID via NFC card or QR code.

Does Group Two really need the same detection as Group One?
Yes — on the core detection technology (fatigue, distraction, sunglasses penetration, and the 2 hour 30 minute rest-break alert), Groups One and Two are effectively identical. The difference is Group One also requires individual driver ID with vehicle immobilisation, geofencing, and real-time notifications on every event.
Can I upgrade from Group Three to Group One later?
Yes — every Geobox solution has a defined upgrade path. A device deployed today for Group Three requirements can be upgraded toward Group One compliance without a full system replacement.
